Al-Hasakah: Families sell their homes to smugglers to reach Europe

Local media reported that several families in al-Hasakah governorate were forced to sell their homes to pay for their children's journey to Europe through smuggling routes.

The sources claimed that many families in al-Hasakah, northeastern Syria, began selling their homes to traffickers to encourage their members to migrate to European countries.

The sources also reported that young men sold their family home for $22,000, and their father received only $4,000, while the smuggler kept the rest as a salary for the smuggling trip to Germany.

Recently, the purchase of homes in Syria by the usual traditional methods has declined, which has contributed to the emergence of a market in which they are sold in exchange for smuggling fees at unearned prices for smugglers to Europe.

Most of al-Hasakah is under the control of the "Syrian Democratic Forces", SDF, and parts of it are still under the control of the Assad regime.

The pace of migration from Al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria has increased significantly in recent months, in an attempt to reach Europe, prompting many families to sell their homes and properties to avoid the high cost of the smuggling trip to Turkey, and then to cover Western European countries.
